The ongoing strike led by the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress was suspended.

The decision to suspend the strike followed the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The meeting, lasting close to an hour, involved various affiliates and state chapters reviewing the outcomes of discussions between the organized labor leaders and Ribadu. Tommy Etim, the National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, confirmed the suspension, expressing trust in Nuhu Ribadu’s assurances.

The strike was initiated in protest against the alleged brutalization of NLC National President Joe Ajaero and the government’s failure to implement agreements reached on October 2, 2023.

Hence, the NLC insisted on specific actions for resolution: firstly, the arrest and prosecution of Chinasa Nwaneri, a Special Adviser to the Imo Governor on Special Duties, accused of leading the attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero and workers.

The union also demands the arrest, prosecution, and dismissal of all police officers and thugs involved in the assault. It calls for the apprehension, prosecution, and dismissal of the Chief Security Officer in Imo State Government House, identified as SP Shaba, who allegedly played a role in the attack.

Additionally, the NLC seeks the arrest, prosecution, and dismissal of an unnamed police area commander overseeing the brutalization of workers.

The final condition involves the investigation and prosecution of the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Ahmed Barde, for his alleged involvement in the assault on the NLC chief. The NLC emphasizes that their demands aim for justice.

According to the National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, “The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike. We did this based on our trust for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his words,” he said.
