On July 28, 2024, as Minister of Sports Development, I visited Team Nigeria athletes at the Games Village in Paris for a candid session and personal interactions, continuing my tradition of direct communication with athletes. This open-door policy led Favour Ofili to express concerns about her race registrations, prompting immediate action.

When Ofili faced issues at the African Championships in Douala, I personally intervened, and this instance was no different. Upon hearing her concerns, I contacted Professor Ken Anugweje of the Ministerial Podium Performance Committee, who assured me that the matter was being addressed with the 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), Chief Solomon Ogba.

The Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, confirmed that Ofili was registered for the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay, and the AFN Secretary General reiterated that Ofili’s name was on the final list submitted to the NOC. I am awaiting an explanation from the NOC President.

Ofili, a top-eight World Championships finisher, Commonwealth Games silver medalist, African Games champion, former World U20 champion, and African Senior Athletics Championships 200m champion, deserves every opportunity to compete.

I will not tolerate negligence in the Ministry of Sports Development. There will be thorough investigations and sanctions for any recklessness. The AFN and NOC must ensure Ofili competes in her qualified events at the Paris Olympics.
